Brothers Since 1984 is a love letter to turtle shipping in zine form, celebrating over 40 years of rich history. T-cest has been a staple of the TMNT fandom since the franchise’s inception and has brought to life projects great and small, helped find artistic joy, and forged life-long friendships. In honor of its long, on-going history, we’re putting together this zine, to commemorate all inceptions and variations of the ship. From the oldest to the newest, past to present. From 1984 to 2023.

What is a zine? | A zine is a collection of fanworks, made by fans for fans, bundled together. |
Is the zine physical or digital? For free, for-profit, or for-charity? | The zine is digital and for free. |
Who can apply? | Anyone 18 or older by the time applications close can apply to the zine. |
What's the zine's rating? | There will be both SFW and NSFW content. The rating ranges from G to E on AO3. |
Will my name be mentioned if I contribute? | We give our contributors the option to remain anonymous and keep their name out of all parts of the project. Please be aware that you will however be required to join the discord server to participate as a contributor. |
How do I apply? | Keep tuned for our contributor and application guidelines. |
Am I allowed to share my work? | By signing up for the zine, you agree to keep any pieces you make for it private until after the zine has released. This includes progress reports and snippets. |
Can I apply to multiple positions? | Yes. You can be selected for a maximum of 2 positions. |

Gale. Head and Writing mod. (she/her) @lameotello
Hi there! I’m Gale! I’ve been wanting to create a t-cest zine for months now, and I’m so stoked that it’s finally going to be a reality! The ship and community both mean a lot to me, and I’m happy we get to celebrate it together in this zine!
Squiggle. Art mod. (she/they) @squigglingo
Hi I’m Squiggle! I'm an artist and I joined the fandom around 6 months ago. In that time I’ve met so many lovely and talented people that make it a joy to continue creating. I’m thrilled to be part of a project that celebrates this community- old and new fans alike!
Cy. Art mod. (they/them)
Heya, I'm Cy! Being into TMNT and tcest has been the first time I've actively participated in a fandom in about 8 years, and it's been so much fun! I'm super excited to be working on this zine, and to get to create and celebrate alongside so many of the people that make this community such a wonderful space! I can't wait to see what everyone makes, and look forward to working with everyone! <3
Bat. Graphics and Formatting mod. (he/she/they)
This has easily been the most welcoming fandom, so I offered my help to make this project look it's very best. I want this zine to be a gorgeous compendium of what we can do! Such amazingly talented group of people deserve this much.

All works must be wholly original and created specifically for the zine. Tracing, plagiarism, stealing, and AI works such as AI art, ChatGPT and character.ai are NOT allowed. Contributors in violation of this will be dropped from the zine.
The zine will feature both SFW and NSFW content. Pieces can feature any range from fluff to angst. Explicit gore, such as body mutilation, will not be allowed.

Contributors must…

Application Guidelines
Submit samples that best represent your work and the style you wish to use in the zine
T-cest samples are not required, however at least 1 sample must be TMNT related.
Samples that contain the following content must be tagged: NSFW (additionally, what content can be expected from the NSFW samples), needles.
All samples and portfolios must be publicly available. Google Drive is preferred but other portfolio sites are accepted, as long as mods can access easily. When using Google Drive or Documents, please ensure the “anyone on the internet with the link can view” setting is enabled. You can check links by visiting them in incognito mode or asking a friend for help. We won’t be requesting access to private samples or portfolios.
Requested samples must link to ONE sample only. Only link to a collection of works in the portfolio section.
You may apply to multiple roles, but will be selected for a maximum of 2 roles.
Portfolio Requirements
Writers
Must submit 3 samples between 500 - 2.5k words. Samples that go under or over will be disqualified. We are evaluating your ability to make a compelling story within a given word count. We will judge your application based on these samples, so please ensure they best represent your work and the style you wish to use in the zine.
You may submit excerpts, but all samples must have a clear beginning, middle, and end.
We will be evaluating your application based on the following criteria: spelling, grammar, punctuation, paragraph formatting, consistent tenses and word usage. You will also be evaluated on pacing and characterization.
Don’t paste samples directly into google forms. All works must be hosted externally (Google Docs, AO3, etc). Please ensure each sample is easily accessible. When using Google Docs, make sure the “anyone on the internet with the link can view” setting is enabled. While AO3 is permitted, should it be inaccessible for any reason, we won’t be reaching out.
Samples must be in a legible font and font size. Images/screenshots of fics will not be accepted.
Twitter threads will not be accepted as samples.
A portfolio is optional. If we feel your samples aren’t enough to judge your application, we may use your portfolio. All works in your portfolio must follow the same rules as the samples. While Google Drive is preferred, other portfolio sites are accepted as long as they’re easily accessible. When using Google Drive, please ensure the “anyone on the internet with a link can view” setting is enabled.
T-cest works are recommended but not required. At least 1 sample must be TMNT related.
Additionally:Article writers must sumbit at least 1 sample that showcases their ability to write non-fiction. In addition, at least 1 non-fiction sample must have linked sources to showcase the applicant's ability to research and fact-check.Article samples must stay within 500 - 1.5k words.Non-fiction samples will be evaluated on: spelling, punctuation, paragraph formatting, word usage, and consistency. We will also be evaluating if relevant information can be obtained easily from the text.
Artists:
Must submit 3-5 samples. You will mainly be judged on these samples, so please ensure they best represent your work and the style you wish to use in the zine.
Must submit a portfolio. We’ll use your portfolio if you’ve applied to multiple art roles or if we feel your samples are not sufficient to make a decision.
Google Drive is preferred, but social media, carrd, powerpoint, and other portfolio sites are also accepted as long as your work is easily accessible to mods. When using Google Drive, make sure the “anyone on the internet with a link can view” setting is enabled.
If you’re using your social media profile as a portfolio, please make sure your art is easy to find (e.g., a dedicated tag on tumblr).
T-cest works are recommended but not required. At least 1 sample must be TMNT related, to show the applicant is able to recognizably draw the turtles.
At least 1 sample must be fully colored (black and white works are allowed) and include a proper/full background.
We will be evaluating your application on anatomy, use of color (this includes artwork in black and white), lighting and shading, composition, and background.
Additionally:Comic Artists must submit at least 1 comic piece as a sample. Additional pieces may go in your portfolio.Along with general artist evaluation guidelines, comic artists will be evaluated on: Clarity of story, actions, and dialogue. Can we tell what’s happening, how the story is progressing, who is speaking, and what is being said? Legibility of text/typesetting as well as paneling fall under this category.
Spot Artists are not required to sumbit samples or portfolios that include backgrounds.Providing artwork alongside text is a bonus, but not a requirement. Applicants unable to provide such samples will not be penalized.
Merch Artists should submit samples that show an awareness of merchandise design, which may include using merch-appropriate silhouettes, creating appealing designs with strong lines or limited colors — in the case of printable merch items, having unified cutlines, etc.We will be looking for cohesion in the art, but merch artists are welcome to submit multiple styles to best suit each type of merch item (i.e. painterly style for wallpapers, chibi style for icons).Merch artists are not required to sumbit samples or portfolios that include backgrounds.
